About “The Steep Side Of The Marble”

Live by the white lie, die by the same. Turn a blind eye and remain so forever.

Life is a cumulative thing, dragging all wares and actions, good or bad, to a climax. The self-indulgent life of the southern Hooper sisters was fated to be built mightily against that time. Raised on a tea plantation their world was insular and privileged, their crimes small but hurtful. The years tumble forward. A grave choice is made by all. The same sisters, now elderly, converge for the family reunion in the old summer home on the river. The gathering of nine is acrimonious, the sister’s bond dismantling, and the scheming ways of sister Bev, day by day, throwing what was deemed to be a beautiful week into chaos. The free spirit of Lily and her mother, Dar, are pure sanity and hope in this atmosphere. Lily is driven to uncover the truth about Virginia’s old maid, Bigbee. Her name floats but is avoided. Racism, homophobia, addiction, guilt, and blessed hope hurl themselves against the glass of this family. Lily takes the mantle, as Virginia tells her she is the hope for rebirth and resurrection of the Hooper clan.
